Matt Hancock has whip suspended after agreeing to join ‘I’m A Celebrity’ as contestant | Politics News

Former health secretary Matt Hancock has been suspended after a source close to him said he would be starring in I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.

Mr Hancock will be flown to the Australian jungle, believed to be the arrival after the reality TV show.

Police Chief Simon Hart MP said: “Following my conversation with Matt Hancock, I have reviewed the situation and believe it is a serious enough matter to warrant the immediate suspension of the caning. “

Mr Hancock was health secretary during the COVID pandemic, but resigned after breaking containment rules by carrying out an affair in his ministry office with aide Gina Coladangelo.

The source said, “I’m A Celeb is the most watched show on TV.

“Matt doesn’t expect to serve in government again, so it was a great opportunity for him to socialize with the 12m Britons who tune in every night.

“Matt has spoken before the whips in front of parliament and he will use his time in the woods to promote his dyslexia campaign.

“Matt has a great team working with him in West Suffolk, but the producers agreed that he could contact them if there was an urgent precinct issue.”

The source added: “There are many ways to do the job of an MP.

“Whether he’s in the camp for a day or three weeks, there are very few places where people can see a politician as they really are.

“Where better to show the human side of the people who make these decisions than with the most watched show on TV?”.

I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here begins on ITV on November 6.

Members of Mr Hancock’s local Tory Party were less than happy about his decision to fly to Australia to appear on the show.

Andy Drummond, vice-president of the West Suffolk Conservative Association, told the PA news agency: “I was expecting him to eat a kangaroo’s penis.

“Quote me. You can quote me [on] that.”

SNP MP Pete Wishart said: “It says Matt Hancock would rather be stuck in a secluded forest eating kangaroo’s testicles than spend a while longer on the Tory bench in Westminster, as Rishi Sunak’s government wobble from one crisis to another.”

Mr Hancock will not be the first politician to enter the woods.

Conservative MP Nadine Dorries joined the twelfth season of I’m a Celebrity in 2012, coming in at number 11.

In response to Mr Hancock’s news, she joked that at least “he doesn’t have to worry about George Osborne at No10 waiting to be whipped when he returns”.
