Mating Plan, presented by Spendthrift: Brilliant Farm Mt.

With the 2022 breeding season underway, we continue to offer a range of breeders’ mating plans. Today we have Cooper Sawyer, Farm Manager of Mt. Brilliant.

MORENA (Per) (m, 18, Owned – Charytin (Per), by Summing) to be bred Map of Liam

This mare had a really nice one Evenly which we sold at the September Sale last year. This year she has a Organization dirty.

We will be back Map of Liam with her this year. Morena herself was a champion in Peru and she is also the dam of the Creator (Tapit), who won GI Belmont S. 2016 We Thought Map of Liamwith Song of the Unstoppable, will give her a little extra footwork, just what she needs.

We are very supportive Map of Liam. We like the quality horse he gets you and he’s doing some really good things. She’s also a really big mare, so he was hoping to clean her up a bit. I think the most important thing with this mating is that you get the natural speed from its pedigree.

SECRET SOMEONE (m, 11, AP Indy – Private Gift, by Unbridled) was bred with Uncle Mo

Someone’s Secret was bred and raced by [farm owner] Mr. Greg Goodman, so she is a fan of the farm. We held her back the first time by Candy Ride (Arg) and then last year we sold her pony Into Mischief to Mike Ryan for $1 million.

Her gift of privacy is one of our foundation mares. We kept a lot of her fillings and raced them out ourselves. We tried to give this mare the best chance we could. When she raced for us, she finished third in the GIII Modesty H. and she won the Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf S.

This mare really hits the house on many levels for us, so we tried to give her a big hit. She gave us beautiful ponies. We were on the moon with her pony Into Mischief. I kept up with him and he looked really fast. They are very excited about him.

Secret Someone Had One Quality Sugar colt this year and she will Uncle Mo. The Individual Gift family operates with a wide variety of broodstock lines. We gave her Quality Sugar last year touched GISW Dunbar Road (Quality Sugar) [out of a half-sister to Secret Someone] and Into Mischief in the same line as MGSW Private Mission (Into Mischief) [half-sister to Secret Someone]. So we decided to take a different path this year with Uncle Mo. He’s a great guy and we’ve done a great job with him. He gives her that little bit of brilliance you can always expect from him.

PRIVATE GIFT (m, 20 years old, Unbridled – Private Status, by Alydar) will be bred to Into Mischief

Private Gift had a pony at the end of last season so we were unable to re-breed it. This year she will return with Into Mischief. We were so excited for MGSW Private Mission (Into Mischief), whom she ended up killing in 2018. She’s such a lovely person. We sent her to Saratoga and Donato Lanni fell in love with her.

URSULA (m, 5, Tapit – Debonnaire (GB), by Anabaa) was bred with Munnings

Ursula is a half-sister to G1P Hartnell (Authorized). We actually sent her Debonnaire dam back to Australia a few years ago. We managed to get a few ponies out of her here and we decided to keep Ursula. We sold her but we put her on high reserve because we liked her so much, so we ended up racing her. She is very talented and has faced off against some of the top track and field athletes. She’s second in two holdings at Fair Grounds.

She has a Medaglia d’Oro yearn and this year she had an impressive Into Mischief movie. We are sending her to Munnings This year. Ursula is very talented and has some very nice ponies, but we wanted to give her a little more speed. Given her international pedigree, we wanted to give her purity without sacrificing her international flare as a half-sister to Hartnell. She’s really dirty, but we want to give the pitch a chance with the Sightstown line.

FAMOUS (Ire) (m, 15 years old, Danehil Dancer (Ire) – Starlight Dreams, by Black Tie Affair {Ire}) will be bred Tapit

Famous as the house sister of the Mastercraftsman (Ire) champion. She was bred with Galileo very early on and we bred her colt II Paradiso (Galileo) who finished third in the G1 Melbourne Cup. We moved away from Galileo and crossed her with Bernardini, the creator of the staking Love Beach, who was also in our broodmare band.

Famously the Group 1 is located and she has produced classic long-distance running horses everywhere. This is a family that we are trying to stay. We were the lower bidder for her daughter Sherbet Lemon (Lemon Drop Kid) at Tattersalls last year. There are all kinds of fillings coming up in this family so we’re trying to make a good shot.

Famous has a Tapit yearning and yearning and this year she has a Quality Sugar dirty. We have her back Tapit. Her longing by Tapit really good so we want to repeat that. Tapit is a generic male and we did a great job with him. We always say that if you are going to breed Tapitjust get out Tapitthat way. She’s a bit of an unlucky mare in that she knocks on the door to be a great mom, so we’re giving her every chance we can by sending her to Tapit. We have great confidence in her.

Into Mischief colt out of Supe Superiorcomplex (Ire) on sale for $1.35 million at Keeneland’s September 2021 Sale | Keeneland

SUPERIORITYCOMPLEX (Ire) (m, 8, Spin hard – Justlookdonttouch (Ire), by Galileo) was bred to Tapit

This mare and her sister SW Abingdon (Street Cry {Ire}) that we bought at Newmarket are exactly what we were looking for in our show. They are mares with older families in America that have been successful in Europe and we try to bring them back here. We wanted to be able to take these mares and throw some old dirt on them and make them great American families again. This is a family that we think is knocking on the door to becoming one big American family.

We actually raced this mare in America. She ranks fourth in equity at Arlington.

First, we bred her with Into Mischief and was bought by Winchell Thoroughbreds for a $1.35 million pony last year. Unfortunately she lost her Evenly last year. She is now a pony to Tapit and then she will come back Tapit. We were lucky with Tapit and saw it as a great opportunity to use him again. We want to breed Tapit every chance we can get. We couldn’t be happier with the results from Into Mischief and we have high hopes for this mare as a producer.

LOOK AT ME MORE (m, 5, Spin hard – Wasted Tears, by Najran) to be bred with Quality Sugar

As half-sister to GI Breeders’ Cup Adolescent Corniche (Quality Sugar), we thought we’d take a flyer and send her to Quality Sugar. It’s a pretty obvious mating. We bought her last year at the Keeneland November Sale. We love Corniche and think he has a very bright future. We have been using Quality Sugar a lot and really like him. The trend is your friend, so we won’t go against it.

Look Me Over is in pony form The joy of kittens this year and we were really excited to see that pony and then send her over Quality Sugar.

SKY GIRL (m, 12, Sky Mesa – The Vargas Girl, by the Vice Minister) was bred as Music by Maclean

This is the half-sister of champion Abel Tasman (Quality Sugar). We did a great job with her in the auction. We sold a Quality Sugar coveted $775,000 for David Ingordo last year. She has a Uncle Mo longing to be a big, fat looking Indian Charlie and then, this year, she’s the pony to Nyquist.

This year she will Music by Maclean. We have been using him for a while. We want to speed up this mare as much as possible. Music by Maclean It’s no longer a secret and his start is, as everyone says, amazing. We found that AP Indy coming from Pulpit to her is a really good cross for him. We used Music by Maclean a lot lately. We like what we’re seeing from his ponies, so we trust him enough to throw this kind of mares at him.

ITHINKISAWAPUDYCAT (m, 13, Bluegrass Cat – Unbridled Run, by Unbridled) will be bred to Curlin

This is a wonderful mare; She is very nice to us. She is GISW’s dam Sweet Loretta (Tapit). We’ve had beautiful looking ponies from her and have raced almost anything for her. We have her Tapit colt Predict who is doing well and practicing. We sold her Uncle Mo last year was dirty and this year we have a Quality Sugar yearning to be special. She has a lot of legs and she is very classy and forward. We can’t wait to introduce her to the team in Fasig-Tipton for Saratoga.

I think if we criticize this mare, she won’t put much substance in her pony. They are all very athletic but they are average size. This year, we are sending her to Curlinwho I think will give her more substance to get that top, top-notch racehorse.

We put a lot of thought into our mating with Greg, Hutton and Bo Goodman, Marette Farrell and myself. We go through a lot of different things. It took us a long time to breed an unproven stallion. We are almost always proven. We don’t care who other people are breeding with. We strive to breed the best athletes possible for the best racehorses. Remember that, Curlin jumped out of us this year. We have used him in the past and I think he is what we were looking for to get a little more substance out of this mare.
