Maserati unveils Tipo Folgore for 2023 Formula E debut


Maserati says its Formula E efforts will play a key role in the development of the Folgore all-electric car.

Maserati is set to make its Formula E debut next year, returning to single-seater racing after 60 years. The brand has now revealed its Formula E rival, Tipo Folgore, incorporating Maserati’s traditional blue color into its paintwork.

Maserati Tipo Folgore debuts for the 2023 Formula E season

2023 will start the new Formula E 3 generation era, introducing the fastest, most powerful and most efficient racing cars of the championship to date. They are 50 kg lighter than Gen2 vehicles and 100 kW more powerful, delivering 350 kW (476 hp) power and a top speed of 320 km/h. The Gen3 cars also have front and rear powertrains that deliver 600 kW of renewable energy, so no rear hydraulic brakes are required.

To launch Formula E, Maserati has partnered with Venturi Racing. The name ‘Tipo Folgore’ is a nod to the automaker’s past as well as its future. The Tipo 26, first shown at Targa Florio in 1926 (first in the class), was the first race car to carry the Trident emblem. ‘Folgore’ refers to Maserati’s line of all-electric vehicles.

Maserati will also be the first Italian brand to compete in Formula E and references to that paint color with three Italian colors on either side of the baffle.

Following the recent exits of BMW, Audi and Mercedes, Formula E has pushed Gen3 cars to be more in line with brands when it comes to technology transfer to road cars. For example, the new battery is much smaller and lighter than any comparable battery.

Maserati is counting on this track-to-road transition to help further develop its Folgore lineup. An official statement said, “The expertise in the racetrack, technology and software used in Formula E is an important part of this competitiveness and will transfer to high-road cars. Maserati with the upcoming launch of the Folgore range.”

Edoardo Mortara and Max Guenther will drive for Maserati MSG Racing next year.

Nyck de Vries was originally rumored to be driving for Maserati in its first Formula E season. However, with the Dutch racer step up to F1 with AlphaTauriMaserati had to find a replacement.

Now, the whole team will head to Valencia for the official pre-season test on December 13-16. Season 9 is underway with the Mexico City E-Prix on January 14 and it has the biggest calendar yet. of Formula E with 16 rounds – including Hyderabad E-Prix 11 February, as well as new trips to Cape Town (South Africa), Sao Paulo (Brazil) and Portland (USA).
