Mary J. Blige Calls Upcoming Super Bowl Performance “A Chance of a Lifetime” When Discussing Unfair Performances
Mary J. Blige knows her music make money, even if they don’t come from the National Football League! As you may already know, Mary is just one artist on the stacked list of Super Bowl LVI performers coming to our theaters this weekend. She was the only female artist to perform on the halftime show, which featured Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar. She recently joined the host of “The Cruz Show” and considers the upcoming performance “the opportunity of a lifetime” while discussing not being paid for the gig.
As recently reported by ‘Esquire’, the NFL only finance the production of the show midway through, including the staff involved in making it happen! But the cost of doing so is not cheap. The NFL is said to have spent $13 million in production costs on Shakira and Jennifer Lopez’s 2020 performance. So the federation saves money on performances lasting 12 to 15 minutes by not paying for the big-name talent they put in place.
“You don’t have to pay me, but if you do, it’ll be a lot of money, but I’m good,” Mary told the off-camera hosts. “This is main, this is [an] opportunity of a lifetime. ”
Artists benefit from exposure before, during and after the halftime performance, which is one of the most anticipated, annual performances. CNBC reported that back in 2018, Justin Timberlake 534% increase in his musical revenue during his performances.
So while the online audience debates the annual theme, Mary seems driven by opportunity (and the possibility of future testing). One of the presenters, who does not appear in the clip, responded to Mary’s comment by saying, “it pays for itself”.
“This is [an] opportunity of a lifetime. Eminem said it and Lucious said…this is the chance of a lifetime,” replied Mary with a chuckle. “You better lose yourself,” she repeated after the same presenter. ”
