EVERYBODY reports that Mariah Thomas is now facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter in connection with her child’s death. The Jackson County District Attorney announced on February 10 that Thomas pleaded guilty to child murder and first-degree child endangerment.

Michael Mansur, director of communications, and Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker shared an update on the case. They explained that Mariah admitted she intended to put her 1-month-old baby for a nap but accidentally placed the baby in a hot oven.

Kansas City police responded to a call about an “infant not breathing” just before 1:30 p.m. in February. Court documents reveal that responders noticed the baby had obvious burns and melted clothing.

PEOPLE shared that Thomas called an unidentified adult to report her alleged mistake, court documents say. “I thought I put it in the crib and accidentally put it in the oven,” Thomas explained. The unidentified person was away when Thomas called hysterically about the baby.

In an official press release, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker praised first responders and prosecutors for their diligent efforts. “We appreciate all the first responders who worked at this scene and the prosecutors who arrived on the scene to bring these charges,” Baker said.

Additionally, Baker expressed his heartbreak over the child’s tragic death.

“We acknowledge the terrible nature of this tragedy and our hearts are heavy with the loss of this precious life. We trust the criminal justice system to respond appropriately to these terrible circumstances.”

According to The Kansas City Star, Mariah Thomas remains in custody on $100,000 bail. It is known that her trial will take place on January 13, 2025. At this time, she has pleaded not guilty in the case.
