Maria Sharapova welcomes first child Theodore
Maria Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one, announced Friday that she has given birth to a baby boy named Theodore.
He is the first child of 35-year-old Russian tennis star and 42-year-old British businessman Alexander Gilkes, who announced their engagement in December 2020.
“The most beautiful, challenging and rewarding gift our little family could ask for,” Sharapova posted Friday on Instagram, noting in Roman numerals that Theodore was born on July 1.
Sharapova, who revealed in April that she was pregnant, is one of only 10 women to complete a career Grand Slam by winning all four major singles titles at least once.
In 2004, Sharapova won her first major title at Wimbledon at the age of 17 and was followed by winning the 2006 US Open, Australian Open 2008 and 2012 and 2014 French Open titles.
She also won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics, losing to American Serena Williams in the final.
