Marc Gasol: ‘The door didn’t close’ when he returned to the NBA

Marc Gasol currently playing football in Spain, but his NBA career may not be over yet. Gasol, who turns 37 this month, is both owner and player of Basquet Girona. In an interview with Spanish publication Cadenaser, he indicated that he still has options for a return to the NBA, Sportando forward Dario Skerletic.

“In the NBA, they know I haven’t closed,” he said. “Now I want to do this (play in Girona) and they understand that, probably more than a lot of people here in Spain. The door isn’t closed, I’m not saying I’ll be back or I’m evaluating it, but I know there’s interest on their part… at the moment, I’m focusing on Girona. ”

A three-time All-Star and former Defensive Player of the Year, Gasol played 13 NBA seasons before deciding to return to his hometown. He was the starting center of the Lakers for most of last season, averaging 5.0 points and 4.1 rebounds in 52 games.

However, Gasol didn’t have much playing time after LA signed the contract Andre Drummond mid season. In September, he was traded to the Grizzlies, who released him 5 days later.

Gasol says he’s in no rush to make decisions about his future. The Spanish league’s fixture list runs until mid-May, and with Gasol determined to live up to his commitment to Girona, it’s unlikely he’ll return to the NBA this season.

“The most precious thing we have is time,” he said. “We have little time and each of us decides how to invest. In order to live unique experiences, I want to dedicate this time to a city that has supported me during difficult moments in sport, as I began my career at the age of 21”.
