Marc Cucurella: Chelsea reach agreement to sign Brighton left-back for £52.5m | Football news
Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton for £52.5m.
The Spaniard made a transfer request on Friday in an attempt to promote a move to Manchester City but the Premier League champions are unwilling to pay Brighton’s asking price for the 24-year-old.
The Seagulls had previously turned down a £30m offer for full-back Pep Guardiola, who is looking to replace Oleksandr Zinchenko after he joined Arsenal.
Cucurella enjoyed a hugely successful first season in the Premier League after moving from Getafe in a deal worth around £15m last summer and was named Brighton player of the season.
Brighton didn’t want to let Cucurella go and they had to make a huge offer from Chelsea when he had four years left on his contract at Amex.
Chelsea move to Cucurella with doubts surrounding left-back Marcos Alonso’s future, with Barcelona reportedly keen to sign the 31-year-old this summer. The Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta is also being wanted by the Spanish giants to have this defender with one year left on his contract.
First-choice left-back Ben Chilwell, who joined Leicester in August 2020 for £50m, missed much of last season with a knee injury but has returned to full fitness ahead of the season. .
Thomas Tuchel’s side made two signings this summer with the arrival of Raheem Sterling for £47.5m from Man City and defender Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli in a deal worth £33m.
