Manila exits Fiba 3×3 Cebu Masters in Chico Lanete’s final game
The Manila Chooks had to leave the Chooks-to-Go Fiba 3×3 World Tour Cebu Masters 2022 after failing to secure Saturday’s main draw at SM Seaside in Cebu.
The Philippines second-place 3×3 team fell to Doha QSC, 21-16, in the final of the virtual qualifying draw, making the Cebu Chooks the only home team in the two-day top-tier Fiba tournament. .
Chico Lanete played the last game of his career in the loss. He is retiring from basketball after more than 15 years of his career.
Chooks-to-Go President Ronald Mascariñas led the retirement ceremony honoring the Chooks 3×3 head coach.
Lanete went all out in her swan, helping Henry Iloka and Ken Holmqvist stage the rally to cut the six-point deficit to just one, 14-13, with 3:15 left.
But Doha QSC turned to Dejan Janjic and Abdou Khapre Diop to keep the Philippines players on before Mohamed Abdelaziz delivered the final blow from outside the box with 44.9 seconds left.
Qatar has completed the main draw of 12 teams, where Cebu Chooks are playing.
Iloka leads Manila with an 11-point lead over Manila in the losing effort.
