Man found guilty of killing six in car attack on Christmas parade near Milwaukee | US News
A man has been found guilty of killing six people by driving his car into a Christmas parade near Milwaukee last year.
Darrell Brooks faces 77 charges, including six counts of murder, in connection with the November 21 attack in Waukesha, about 15 miles from Wisconsin.
More than 60 people were injured in the incident and the ages of those killed ranged from 8 to 81 years old.
Brooks now faces life in prison.
The 40-year-old initially pleaded guilty by reason of mental illness but withdrew that plea in September.
The following month, he fired his lawyers and began representing himself.
He argued that the car had a malfunction with the accelerator and had no intention of injuring anyone and had honked his horn to warn passersby.
Prosecutors said Brooks fled in the SUV after an argument with his girlfriend but did not know why he drove into the parade other than out of anger.
He was released on bail following an allegation of domestic violence at the time.
“When you ride through a parade route and run over children … your intentions are known. It was not an accident,” Waukesha County District Attorney Sue Opper said in the conclusion. .
