KOLKATA: Premier of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee on Monday warned colleagues in her cabinet about “disrespecting the party in any way” before making a public announcement that there would be a cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday. A few minutes ago CM’s cabinet reshuffle announcement, Trinamool Congress caused a major organizational change across several counties.
All three developments came in about an hour on Monday,. and that he was “the victim of a conspiracy”.
Cabinet reshuffle is required by many vacancies, Banerjee explain. “Our senior ministers Subrata da (Mukherjee) and Sadhan Pande have passed away, and Partha da (Chatterjee) is in prison. Who will do their job? Someone is going to have to do it,” CM said, adding that some parts are headless. “I can’t take care of all the departments,” she said. CM indicated that five or six people will be introduced in the cabinet. Bengal currently has 20 cabinet ministers (besides Ms. Banerjee), 10 independent state ministers and 9 junior ministers. By norm, Bengal can have 44 ministers (15% of the combined power of 294 MLA).
Banerjee has speculated that there will be a complete cabinet overhaul due to Chatterjee’s arrest. “I don’t have that in mind. A reform is underway. It will be done on Wednesday afternoon,” she said.
There is much speculation about the possibilities, with the names of Partha Bhowmik, Babul Supriyo, Tapas Ray and Udayan Guha perform rounds.
The organizational reorganization has seen several key leaders removed, one important exception being district chief Birbhum Anubrata Mandal. Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar will now head the Barasat venue. Bagda MLA Biswajit Das, who switched to TMC after winning the BJP ticket polls, is now the head of the Bongaon unit. The seniors said that the party is trying to limit as many responsibilities to one person as possible. Chatterjee has four cabinet posts and five party positions and is a major obstacle to the one-man-one-post policy.
