Karim Benzema scored twice to help Real Madrid leave the top of La Liga to 10 points with a 3-0 victory at Real Mallorca.
Benzema braced himself after Vinicius Junior opened the scoring as the top team doubled their advantage over second-placed Sevilla, with arch-rivals Barcelona five points behind.
The Frenchman, whose hat-trick against Paris Saint-Germain last Wednesday night ensured Madrid reach the Champions League quarter-finals, was rejected from the start by goalkeeper Sergio Rico, while Vedat Muriqi and Takefusa Kubo all approached the home team inside the opening 18 minutes.
After 28 minutes, Toni Kroos made Rico think about something, but it was Mallorca who was denied the lead when Pablo Maffeo’s shot went wide seven minutes later.
Vinicius finally made the breakthrough 10 minutes into the restart when he converted Benzema’s pass to put the visitors ahead, and he was instrumental as his side took the lead 13 minutes later.
The Brazilian was fouled in the box by Brian Olivan and Benzema stepped up to convert the penalty, and the Frenchman doubled the lead with a header in the 82nd minute.
Real Madrid take on Barcelona in El Clasico at 8pm on Sunday, while Mallorca goes to Espanyol on Sunday at 1pm.
