Shadwell Stable’s Malathaat (f, 4, Curlin–Dreaming of Julia, by AP Indy) took the lead in the final jump to win GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff by narrowest margin Blue Stripe (Arg) (Equal stripes {Arg}) and Claire (Curlin). Clairiere and Malathaat were last and second last as Blue Stripe chased pacesetting Society (Gunman). Favorite Nest (Curlin) made a big move in the first leg, but was squashed when Secret Vow (Arrogate) takes the lead into the lane. Malathaat was winding in the middle of the tracks, when Clairiere was sneaking onto the tracks. The Blue Stripe took the lead as the Secret Oath backed away, but Malathaat was flying to her outside and Clairiere was slowly making her way inside as the rope approached, with spikes separating the top three.

Malathaat, last year’s GI Kentucky Oaks winner and 3-year-old defending Eclipse champion, trailed Clairiere twice this summer before winning the GI Personal Ensign S. August 27 and the GI Spinster S. October 9. : 14-10-3-1. O-Shadwell stabilization. B-Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings (United States). T-Todd Pletcher.
