Champion and ‘Rising star TDN’ Malathaat (f, 4, Curlin–Dreaming of Julia, by AP Indy), last seen the third set of the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff in Del on November 6, kicking off her 4-year-old campaign with a harrowing victory as the team won favorites 1-5 at GIII Baird Doubledogdare S. Friday in Keeneland.
Caught up in the fence in this six-horse affair, she was instructed by John Velazquez to clear out and in through two passages that circled the turn of the clubhouse. For the fourth time down the bottom line, Malathaat started to move closer to the long spin and hit a three-point wide putt at the start of the short. She took over shortly after, taking her left lead in the lane, moving closer to home and over 3/4 the length Bonny South (Munnings) at the wire. Super fast (Super saver) and Lady Mystify (Bernardini) died in third place.
Malathaat’s 2021 championship campaign includes wins in GI Central Bank Ashland S. at Keeneland, GI Kentucky Oaks and GI Alabama S. and a runner-up at GI Coaching Club American Oaks.
“She had a stint at Shadwell after the Breeders’ Cup and they did a great job with her – she looks super,” said winning coach Todd Pletcher. “We didn’t want to overdo it for her start of the year, and we kept it in mind not only that she won Ashland here, but also [this year’s] Breeders’ Cup is here too. “
Pletcher added, “[Velazquez] thought he had stepped back a little too far and then all of a sudden, he got there, maybe a little earlier than expected, but she finished the class in the end.”
Genealogical Notes:
Malathaat is the second pony from her dam, winner of the GI Frizette S. (Mighty Warrior) in the GI Kentucky Oaks.
The Dream Rush second dam won the GI Darley Test S. in 2007 and was later sold to Halsey Minor for $3.3 million at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale of that year. She continued training in early 2009, but retired and was covered by AP Indy for her first cover. Dreaming of Julia came out on March 3, 2010, and Dream Rush will continue to produce SW ‘TDN Rising Star’ Atreides (Medaglia d’Oro) and MGSW ‘Rising Star’ Dream Pauline (Tapit).
Malathaat is one of a number of first-class runners raised on the Curlin-AP Indy cross, including tier I winner Stellar Wind, Global campaignParis Lights and Idols.
