A major search operation is continuing after three people were killed in an explosion at a service station in Co Donegal, Ireland.

The explosion happened shortly after 3pm on Friday at the Applegreen service station on the outskirts of Creeslough, where a search operation is continuing with the help of sniffer dogs.

The photos show several cars damaged by debris, with what appears to be an apartment complex behind the foreground that has been largely destroyed.

Search efforts are continuing for others feared missing and a major emergency response operation, involving first responders from both sides of the Irish border, is expected. will continue into the night.

Among those gathered at the scene as sniffer dogs worked in the rubble were relatives of people believed to have been in the building at the time.

Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin said these were “the darkest days” for Donegal and Ireland.

“My thoughts and prayers today are with those who lost their lives and those injured in the horrific explosion in Creeslough,” Taoiseach said.

“I want to express my deepest sympathies to their families, friends and the entire Creeslough community, during these darkest days for Donegal and the country as a whole.

“People across this island will be paralyzed by the same sense of shock and devastation as the people of Creeslough at this tragic loss.

“I would like to thank all members of the emergency services, from across the North West and Northern Ireland, who responded so quickly at the scene and who were working through the night in extremely traumatic circumstances. “

Irish Police Force, An Garda Siochana said: “At this time, An Garda Siochana can confirm three people have died as a result of this serious incident.

“This continues to be an ongoing operation and An Garda Siochana is unlikely to provide further information on casualties at this time.”

‘People are completely numb here’

Councilor John O’Donnell previously told Sky News: “This is very, very difficult here in a small rural village.

“Everybody here is completely numb – we are all shocked.”

A spokesperson for Letterkenny University Hospital said shortly after the blast that it was “dealing with a serious incident, with multiple injuries requiring immediate medical attention”.

“The hospital has gone into Primary Ambulance Standby to address this incident.

“We are urging the public not to go to the Emergency Department unless it is an emergency.”

Forecourt retailer Applegreen confirmed there was a “serious incident” at one of the dealer-operated locations.

‘This is what it’s like to be your worst nightmare’

TD Pearse Doherty said people remained trapped in the building Friday night as emergency services worked to remove debris from the area.

He told RTE news agency: “This is your worst nightmare. This is a quiet village, a very close village, this is the only shop in town.

“It tore through this building, and it was a very crowded site at the time.”

Mr Doherty said it had left “a very dark cloud” over the community.

“There are silent prayers being said, there are still people trapped in the building and emergency services are doing everything they can to remove the wreckage, and people are being treated,” he said. Air transport to our hospitals in the area.

“Only quiet, it’s surreal. People are just holding out hope, waiting to hear the news, positive news coming from the emergency services.”

Irish Deputy Prime Minister Leo Varadkar described the incident as “tragic”.

In a Twitter post, Mr. Varadkar wrote: “Horrible news from Donegal tonight. Our thoughts are with all those affected by the tragic event and with the emergency services responding. “
