Maisie grew up in Somerset with her mother Hilary and her three siblings – James, Beth and Ted, and she first talked about her relationship with her estranged father.

Talking about her childhood on The Diary Of An CEO podcast, Maisie told host Stephen Bartlett that her mother ‘escaped’ her father when she was just 4 months old.

The actress talks about the ‘traumatic’ things she went through in her childhood, which led her to cut contact with her father at the age of eight.

Maisie said she experienced a lot of ‘pain’ and ‘fear’ during her childhood but said she felt like she was ‘taught up’ in a ‘child cult’ because she didn’t recognize the behavior my exposure is ‘wrong. ‘.

Breaking down in tears, she said: ‘Well, I, as a child before the age of eight, had a traumatic relationship with my father. And I also don’t want to get caught up in it because it affects my siblings and my whole family.

‘But, like, that really consumed a lot of my childhood. Since I can remember, I’ve been having a really hard time sleeping.

‘I think a lot of sad things happened, I didn’t realize they were wrong. But I know – I would look around at other kids and say, ‘Why don’t they seem to understand this pain, terror or fear? Where is the joy – when does it come to me? ‘

Maisie tearfully said she would feel a ‘sense of impending doom’ as a child and would feel something bad was going to happen, but didn’t know how to feel happy.

“I had a feeling of doom and I didn’t know how to make that go away,” she said.

‘There was a period in your childhood when things could stunt or forever change the person you would become.’

Maisie said things changed when a teacher asked her what was wrong at school when she was 8 years old and she shared about her family life.

She said: ‘When I was about eight years old there was a rather complicated chain of events that happened, but it basically peaked and I was at school and I was really struggling.

‘I was brought into the staff room by a teacher. She asked me what happened, she said ‘are you hungry?’ and I said ‘yeah’.

‘She asked if I had breakfast, I said ‘why not? ‘ and I said ‘we just didn’t have any breakfast’, and then she asked me how often I eat breakfast.

‘They asked the right questions. My mother came to school and picked me up. This was the first time all the doors were open and everything we were going through was laid out on the table. ‘

But Maisie said she couldn’t understand why she was then separated from her father, saying she felt ‘taught’ and like she was in a ‘children’s cult’.

“I still want to fight and say these things are not wrong, you are just trying to take me away from my father and that is wrong,” she said.

‘I was inspired in a way. I think that’s why I’m obsessed with religions. Because I, like, I get it, I get it. I was in a children’s cult. I really fought with it from the beginning, my whole world turned towards it. ‘

Maisie – who has been open about her mental health struggles – said although she is relieved to not have to see her father anymore, she still struggles with conflicting emotions.

She said: ‘I’m glad I don’t have to see my dad anymore, but that’s been against all I’ve ever known.

‘You can feel liberated and free, and at the same time, like the impending doom is still there.

‘Not only do all your problems go away, you still care a lot about that person, or the pain that led to those very, very bad decisions.’

Maisie said she wants to better understand her father’s motivations because she admits she used to think it was her fault that ‘bad things’ happened when she was a child.

‘Honestly, I’ve been thinking about this a lot. It’s not because of me that these bad things happened when I was a kid,’ she said.

‘I thought so. I was going through something that was inherently wrong with me, that it could be anyone who is going through pain.

‘It made me more interested in the guy. What might cause you to mistreat your children? What happened to you when you were a kid? Did you pull your foot from the bug? Did you learn all of this?

‘That’s how I feel about him now. He’s going to make a fascinating documentary. ‘
