Mahindra Thar 4X2 launched: price, 1.5 diesel, new colors, competitors

The 4X2 drive layout is available with the new 1.5-litre diesel alongside the existing 2.0-litre petrol engine.

Price for multiple predictions Mahindra Thar 2WD has been announced. Mahindra Thar 2WD starts at Rs 9.99 lakh for the new 1.5-litre diesel variant, while the Thar 2WD with the 2.0-litre AT turbocharged petrol engine is priced at Rs 13.49 lakh (old gallery).

  1. Thar 2WD has two engine options
  2. Thar 1.5 diesel engine only comes with manual transmission
  3. Thar petrol 2.0 liter 2WD only comes with 6-speed automatic transmission

Mahindra Thar 2WD: price, engine-gearbox options

Along with the absence of a 4WD transmission, Mahindra has also introduced a smaller 1.5-litre diesel on the Thar 2WD – the same four-cylinder works in the XUV300 and makes 117bhp. The smaller 1.5-litre diesel engine, combined with a length of less than 4m, makes the Thar eligible for lower excise consumption when compared to its larger-engined brethren.

However, the Thar 2WD 1.5 diesel engine only comes with a 6-speed manual transmission. This means that customers looking to buy a Thar diesel automatic will have to opt for the pricier 4WD Thar that comes with the larger 2.2-litre engine.

The second powertrain offered on the Thar 2WD is the same 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol as on the Thar 4WD. This engine is only available with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission and no manual transmission option.

Mahindra Thar 2WD: different exterior and interior

Visually, both the 2WD and 4WD Thar look exactly the same, except for the lack of the 4×4 badge on the former. Mahindra has also introduced two new exterior paint color options on the Thar – Blazing Bronze, which is also available on the XUV300, and the much-interested Everest White. In addition, the 2WD Thar will only be available with the hardtop option.

On the inside, the 2WD Thar has a small hole in place of the 4×4 selector on the 4WD version. In addition, the Thar 2WD has an automatic start/stop function, which can be accessed via the panel between the steering wheel and the driver’s door. The Thar recently got a few buttons – traction control, downhill control and door lock/unlock – repositioned from the dashboard to the center console.

Other than these, everything else remains the same on Thar. The car continues to have a 7-inch touch screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, electrically adjustable outside rearview mirrors, cruise control and LED daytime running lights (DRL).

Mahindra Thar 2WD: rival in India

The Thar 2WD is aimed at buyers who want a Thar but aren’t too keen on taking it off-road. For now, the SUV has no direct rival, but the more expensive Thar 4WD will compete with cars like the Thar 4WD. Gurkhas Force and coming soon Maruti Jimnywill go on sale in mid-2023.
