Mahindra Auto sells 32,915 SUVs with 66% growth in January


Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. announced that their total car sales for January 2023 were 64,335 units. In the Multi-Purpose Vehicle segment, Mahindra sold 32,915 vehicles and 33,040 units in the passenger car segment. These sales figures come despite disruptions in the Airbag ECU and Collision Sensor supply chains due to semiconductor non-availability.

Exports for the month stood at 3,009 vehicles compared with 2,865 units of last year. In the Commercial Vehicle segment, Mahindra sold 21,724 vehicles in January 2023. Sales of utility vehicles increased from 19,848 units to 32,915 units. That’s a 66 percent increase.

According to Veejay Nakra, President, Automotive Division, M&M Ltd., “The successful launch of the Thar RWD and our first all-electric SUV, the XUV400, has received very encouraging feedback. from our customers in the first month of 2023. Our Utility Vehicles saw 66% growth and we see an overall growth of 37%. We continue to closely monitor the dynamics of the supply chain.”

The latest release from the manufacturer is the Thar RWD, which is the most affordable version of the Thar. It now starts at $9.99 lakh (old gallery). The most premium version of Thar costs $16.49 lakh (old gallery). The brand decided to launch a rear-wheel drive version to better compete in the Indian market because Maruti Suzuki Jimny will soon launch. Furthermore, the Thar RWD is for those who want a Thar presence on the road but they won’t be using the SUV for off-roading. Instead, it will be used mainly for missions and city commuting.

The brand is also working on a 5-door version of the Thar It is expected to launch in India sometime this year. Recently, the test mule was spotted with an automatic transmission but without a 4×4 gearshift. This means that the 5-door Thar could also launch with a more affordable rear-wheel drive setup.
