Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari says “I conveyed to PM my desire to be discharged of all political responsibilities”

Governor of Maharashtra says he conveyed to Prime Minister 'Wish' to resign

Mumbai:

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, at odds with the opposition last year, informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he wanted to step down. “Governor Koshyari has expressed his wish to spend the rest of his life reading, writing and other leisurely activities,” the statement issued by Raj Bhavan.

“It is an honor and privilege for me to serve as Rajya Sevak or Rajyapal of such a great State as Maharashtra – the land of Saints, social reformers and brave warriors “, Mr. Koshyari said in a statement to the media.

Mr Koshyari later tweeted:

This unexpected move comes during Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Mumbai. The Governor has expressed his wish to resign before the civil elections in Mumbai.

Mr. Koshiyari has been embroiled in a number of controversies since Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar’s decision to hold an early morning swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhavan following the 2019 state elections.

There have been other controversies since then — his statement against Savitribai Phule and Jyotiba Phule and his refusal to accept a list of 12 MLCs nominated by the previous MVA government to the state legislature has become to the title.

His comment that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was an icon of the old days sparked protests across the state. Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray faction alleges that he insulted the symbols of Maharashtra and was against “Marathi manoos”.

Calling him “biased”, the Opposition staged a protest against Mr Koshyari last month, demanding that he step down as governor.
