Magic Johnson ‘didn’t expect’ series on Showtime Lakers

HBO’s much-anticipated TV series on Showtime Lakers doesn’t seem to be all that popular for the people depicted in it.

TMZ Sports said this week with the retired great Magic Johnson of the LA Lakers and asked him his thoughts on the upcoming series “Triumph: Rise of the Lakers”. The series, produced by Adam McKay, tells the story of the Lakers’ “Showtime” era and will premiere on HBO Max in March.

“No, we have a lot of different shows coming up,” Johnson said when asked if he was excited about the series. “I have one, then you have Jeanie Buss has one on Showtime coming out, so those are the ones I’m looking forward to.”

“I didn’t expect that,” Johnson added of the HBO project. “I’ll leave it at that.”

Johnson also said he won’t be watching the HBO series.

“Winning Time” doesn’t have any actual figures from the “Showtime” era. Instead, Hollywood actors were chosen to play the parts. Johnson is played by Quincy Isaiah in the film. Adrien Brody (as trainer Pat Riley) and John C. Reilly (as the late doctor Jerry Buss) are some of the other notable actors.

While the series has garnered a lot of hype, there are some glaring unhappiness with it from the real Showtime Lakers. Earlier this month, Johnson’s co-star in the group voicing his own dissatisfaction with the series.
