Captain Tom Abell scored the century goal in both halves to lead Somerset to a convincing victory
Somerset sealed Division One’s survival with a 352 lap LV = County Championship win over Northamptonshire at Taunton.
The hosts stretched their second-half total from 277-1 to the claimed 337-4, captain Tom Abell advanced the second century of the game before falling for 115 and Tom Lammonby contributed 110 .
It set a fearsome 462 win target for Northamptonshire and they got off to a dreadful start with four falls for 15. Craig Overton, who finished with a game score of 7-74, beat Emilio Gay to started the fifth inning before pinning Luke Procter lbw three balls behind.
The away side’s disasters continued after lunch, with only Tom Taylor able to get past the 20-run mark, hitting 25 points before being eliminated by Josh Davey, who finished 3-25.
It all ended after 30.4 rounds when Overton caught Jack White on the second slide, Northamptonshire won 109.
In Division Two, Middlesex win important in 80 runs Leicestershire at the Uptonsteel County Ground to raise hopes of promotion.
After knocking Leicestershire down to 13-4 late on Thursday, in pursuit of 275, Middlesex looked set to end a relatively easy win on Friday as the hosts dropped to 70-7, but Colin Ackermann – who was played nearly four hours for his 80 – and the Leicestershire tail refused to fold.
They advanced to 194 against Middlesex, whom Toby Roland-Jones finished 4-34 and scored seven times in the match, was able to close the victory. The victory helped them gain 209 points, only 9 points behind the top team Nottinghamshire after the penultimate round.
