Lucky Powerball ticket holder scoops biggest lottery jackpot in history: $2.04bn (£1.76bn!!!) | US News

A lucky ticket holder in the US has won a $2.04 billion (£1.76 billion!!!) jackpot, the largest lottery prize in history.

The winner bought the ticket in California after spinning for three months with no one to claim the top prize.

The jackpot ticket went on sale at Joe’s Service Center in Altadena, northeast of Los Angeles.

Powerball players shopping at Joe’s will now rush to check if they’ve become the country’s newest billionaire.

Anyone can become the 1,292th richest person in the world, according to Forbes’ latest list of billionaires.

They are in the same position as nearly 50 other billionaires, including those who have amassed their fortunes in oil, real estate and Greek yogurt.

The winning numbers drawn at the Florida Lottery studio in Tallahassee were the white balls 10, 33, 41, 47 and 56.

The red powerball is 10.

The winner must guess all six lucky numbers, including the final Powerball, to win the jackpot.

The new jackpot topped the previous record prize of $1.586 billion (£1.398 billion) won by three Powerball players in California, Florida and Tennessee in 2016.

The latest jackpot reached the estimate $1.9 billion (£1.6 billion) on Mondaybut it rose to $2.04 billion (£1.8 billion) this morning after updating the calculations.

The holder of the winning ticket is the first to win the Powerball jackpot since August 3, when a player from Pennsylvania took home more than $200 million (£177 million).

That streak of 39 consecutive draws without a winner reflects the odds of winning the tough jackpot – at one in 292.2 million.

Only four previous jackpots have peaked at $1 billion (£860m) but none come close to today’s, which started at $20m (£17m) on June 6 8, but rose for three months without winning.

The latest draw was scheduled to take place on Monday night but was delayed to 8:57am US Eastern Time (1.57pm UK) on Tuesday.

The Multi-State Lottery Association said drawing was delayed because a participating lottery had problems processing sales.

The association said it went against its policy to say which lotteries have delays.

A $2.04 billion prize is available to the winner who chooses an annuity, paid annually over 29 years. Nearly all of the winners opted for cash instead, but the value of that option wasn’t immediately available on Tuesday morning.

The game is played in 45 states, as well as Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

Oh, and in case you’re interested in EuroMillions, the winning numbers for the last draw were: 03, 05, 32, 33, 50. The Lucky Stars were 01 and 08. The jackpot was 14. million pounds.
