Mark Webster says “nobody” is backing Michael van Gerwen to win the World match, while Abigail Davies says the Dutchman played for her with his classic ‘I want to free’ quote Queen in a post-match interview.
Speaking on the latest Love The Darts Podcast, the Welsh pundits couldn’t help but applaud the Dutchman after he put in the best performance in years to win the World Match at Winter. Gardens last weekend.
Van Gerwen, who recently had wrist surgery, has been in a slump in recent years since winning his third world championship in 2019, but then winning the Premier League with The third coronation in Blackpool shirt after a forgettable 18-14 win over Gerwyn Price.
“A lot of things happened but Michael van Gerwen won, not only winning the event but also the way he did it. Who supported him? Nobody! When did you not support him? Michael van Gerwen?” Webster said.
“To find such a performance and average when you miss stacks and darts in doubles, I think it’s unbelievable.
“And the emotion! I like everything about it – just what it means to him. He’s won so many events, it would be easy for him to say ‘it’s just another one’ like he does, but it means a lot to him.” It’s something special to see. “
Davies said: “There was something special about Van Gerwen all week. He even sang to me in a post-match interview. He sang ‘I want to break free’ and so did I after the game. heard him sing but it’s been one of the whole week from Michael van Gerwen. It’s great to see him coming back to his best form consistently.”
New world doesn’t cost 1 achieved perfection in his 17-11 semi-final win over Danny Noppertregistered the first nine at the event since Gary Anderson’s 2018 triumph, and Davies felt that moment usurped Van Gerwen’s victory.
“It was Price’s fourth on TV in 2022 and he almost followed it with another on the next turn. It was fourteen perfect darts. For me it was the most important moment and It was extraordinary to see it in public, Davies said.
Van Gerwen won the title with an average of 101, five 100-plus finishes and 15 180 points – a performance that left the rest of the Tour PDC on edge.
Van Gerwen admitted in the post-match interview: “It was the best game I’ve played in a while. “I don’t want to sound rude but I’m pretty dominant at the moment.
“Winning the Premier League and now the Match gives me a great feeling. Of course I don’t love the league, but to create something like this means the whole world to me.”
The three-time world champion added: “If you look at this year’s performance, no one has produced darts better than me. I won two majors, the biggest major this year. what else?”
“I did well, but I know there’s more in the tank and I can do better. I know that.
“I think they’re scared anyway. You know. If you’re going to see how I play with flair, I just think there’s only room for improvement. I don’t want to say too much but sometimes I like myself. ..
“After my first world championship and Premier League title, this is the next one. People at home don’t know what this means to me.
“I went through a difficult period, I constantly had to fight back, I had to fight with everyone. To win against a player like Gerwyn is special.”
