Via Sean Jones: George Kambosos Jr promoter Lou DiBella has heaped praise on Devin Haney, comparing him to Floyd Mayweather Jr following his win over tiny ‘The Emperor’ last Saturday night at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia.
Unfortunately, the reality is this is the furthest you can get with a Mayweather-style show of 23-year-old Haney (29-0, 14 KOs), when he was heavily beaten by former unified lightweight champion Kambosos (20-2, 10 KOs). It’s more like a child Adrien Broner performance from Kambosos than Mayweather.
There was nothing wrong with Haney being another Broner as he was a good boxer as he fought in the featherweight super class before he was beaten and defeated by Marcos Maidana. In those early days, Broner was often compared to Mayweather.
I’m sure Broner is more compared to Mayweather than to Haney today, and his career sank almost immediately when he was promoted to 147. I doubt Haney’s career will sink. before he leaves the 135 lb division, and it will inevitably bottom out when he moves up to 140.
Haney is a good basic fighter that mimics Mayweather’s fighting style, but he doesn’t have the hand speed, reflexes or defense that even a 40-year-old Floyd possessed before retiring.
When/if Haney fights Vasyl Lomachenko, he will be exposed, and boxing fans who think he is genuine 24k gold will find out that he is just stupid gold.
Fans would then jump out of the band and realize that they had been fooled by all the light-hearted matchmaking that was done on Haney’s behalf to make him look better than he really was.
Although Haney won by unanimous decision to lose in round 12, he shed blood and fought like a young Mayweather. The scores are 119-109, 118-110 and 118-110.
Once right, Haney decided not to mention the names of Vasyl Lomachenko and Shakur Stevenson, both of whom are trying to fight him next.

Haney will likely have to taste defeat if he faces Lomachenko or Stevenson next as he has failed to show talent in his young career, which suggests he can beat either of those boxers. .

If Haney had to go through Lomachenko or Shakur to claim the titles he had at the age of 135, he would have lost, and he would have been viewed in the same way as other contenders in the tournament like Isaac Cruz.
