Police source said Poonawala allegedly used orthoboric acid (boric powder), formaldehyde and sulfuric acid and other chemicals in the process of chopping, storing and destroying the body parts. Because six months have passed since the murder occurred, police will have to rely on forensics to corroborate these claims. Reportedly, the defendant frequently changed his answers to the investigator’s questions and testified that he had forgotten many details.
On Tuesday, a police team recovered another body part. Police said whether the recovered debris belonged to a person or an animal will only be determined after a forensic examination. According to police, Poonawala dumped the remains of the body near 100 Foota MB Road, at a culvert near the crematorium, a forested area in Mehrauli and Dhan Mill Compound in Chhatarpur.
It is believed that Poonawala had a fight with Walkar a week before the murder, during which he wanted to kill her but was unable to as she began to cry loudly. A week later, on May 18, they fought again and this time he allegedly strangled her. A police officer said: “He then claimed to have stayed up all night and searched online for ways to dispose of dead bodies and deal with blood and odors. He said he was afraid of being arrested if he did not. dispose of bodies indiscriminately.”
Police sources claim that Poonawala brought some of the women home even when the refrigerator was full of body parts. Investigators will contact dating app Bumble for details about the defendant’s interactions to identify these women. They will also investigate whether a relationship with any of them caused the murder. Poonawala has admitted to police that Walkar doesn’t like him talking on the phone with other women.
Poonawala was detained by the police along with three other people. He ate three or four chapatis on Monday night and slept peacefully. The other inmates were wary of him, fearing he might turn violent.
