Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, has died at the age of 96, leaving the world shocked and mourned. Born in 1926 to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the head of state took his last breath on September 8, 2022, at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

“The Queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and Queen will stay at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” the announcement was made by Buckingham Palace.

Iconic coronation

It was on June 2, 1953, when the whole world witnessed the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II – the first coronation ceremony to be televised. According to Royal, 27 million people in the UK out of a population of 36 million watched the broadcast.

On 6 February this year (2022), the Queen of England became the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom.


Last moments

On Tuesday, September 6, Conservative Party leader Liz Truss was officially appointed Britain’s new Prime Minister by Queen Elizabeth II, becoming the country’s third female prime minister.

Two days later, the Queen was under medical supervision and doctors expressed concern about her health.
