Long Covid Has Played Role in More Than 3,500 Deaths in US, CDC Says

The study found that several patterns of Covid persisting in relation to age, sex, race and ethnicity differ from those of the original infection mortality patterns. For example, while Blacks and Hispanics have a higher initial coronavirus death rate than non-Hispanic whites, those groups don’t have an associated higher mortality rate. associated with prolonged Covid, the study found.

The difference may be partly due to disparities in the system that result in Black and Hispanic patients having less access to health care, the researchers suggest, who might otherwise be able to afford health care. without a proper long-term Covid diagnosis. It may also be because Black and Hispanic patients die from the initial illness higher than white patients, the study said, so they may have “fewer Covid-19 survivors.” to endure the long-term Covid-19 situation”.

Nearly 57 percent of persistent Covid-related deaths are among people 75 years of age and older. Nearly a third of death certificates with long Covid mentions listed the underlying cause or primary cause of death as a non-Covid condition, such as heart disease, cancer or Alzheimer’s disease.

“This is just the surface – this is a first look,” said David Putrino, director of rehabilitation innovation for the Mount Sinai Health System in New York, who was not involved in the study.

He said the study appeared to primarily document the deaths of people with an initial severe coronavirus infection and those who survived that period but continued to suffer organ damage and other serious complications. He said other prolonged Covid-related deaths should be studied, including suicide deaths of people with severe post-Covid symptoms.

Again report published on Wednesday, by Prepare project profile Covid-19, gives an overview of persistent Covid-related deaths by reviewing death certificates in 2020 and 2021 in Minnesota, New Mexico, and several other locations. That report, produced by the Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Columbia University and MuckRock, a publicly-recorded organization, found that 18 of the 28 sustained Covid-related deaths in Minnesota over the years that’s in people over 80 years old and most patients have worked in manual labor and don’t have a college degree. In New Mexico, about a third of the 13 lingering Covid-related deaths were among people under the age of 60, and some were frontline or essential workers, the report said.

The CDC study reviewers warn that it is both an incomplete picture of prolonged Covid-related mortality and a larger toll of the condition, which has been estimated by Government Audit Office affected 7.7 million to 23 million people in the United States.

Dr Putrino said: “This is an important thing to explore and study, but it shouldn’t be used as a proxy for saying, ‘Oh, the Covid pandemic isn’t that bad because look at it. there are very few deaths,” Dr. Putrino said. “We shouldn’t measure the damage caused by prolonged Covid by just deaths.”
