Live updates: Russia’s war in Ukraine
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is expected to release a report on the nuclear safety and security situation in Ukraine later today, including the findings from the mission to the house. Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Last Thursday, IAEA Director Rafael Grossi led a delegation of 14 people to the plant, which has been held by Russian forces since March.
The area around the plant has been hit by persistent shelling for weeks, some of which damaged the plant’s infrastructure, according to the IAEA, raising fears of a nuclear accident.
On Monday, Ukraine’s state nuclear energy supplier, Energoatom, said the plant was operating “at risk of violating radiation and fire safety regulations.”
“Currently, only the 6th power unit is in operation, supplying electricity to Ukraine’s energy system and supplying the own needs of NPP Zaporizhzhia (nuclear power plant),” it added.
Energoatom said the fifth unit was cut off power on Saturday, due to “repeated shelling by Russian invaders” that damaged communication lines between the plant and Ukraine’s power grid.
CNN could not confirm the allegation.
