Live preview of the match – Germany Women vs Austria Women July 21, 2022

Germany head coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg has warned her team “cannot be afraid of failure” before facing neighbors Austria in the quarter-finals of Euro 2022.

Eight-time Euro champions Germany will head to Brentford Community Stadium on Thursday night aiming to improve their shock in eight exits five years ago.

Having lifted the trophy in all but their previous two appearances in the final, Voss-Tecklenburg’s side are undoubtedly the favorites to progress.

But while she called on her players to show their courage against Austria, she did not stop talking about the potential of the two countries’ geography to influence the outcome.

“It makes no difference to us,” she said. “We could face Norway, Sweden, Austria or the Netherlands, all of which are our neighbours. It’s a quarter-final at the Euros, and every opponent deserves it here… that doesn’t affect us.

“We need to play our game. We can’t be afraid to lose, instead we need the courage to win and show our quality. We have a big chance to reach the semi-finals, that’s not the intended target of this Euro.”

Germany won all three of their Group B matches as they struggled to win a record-long ninth European title while the Austrians finished second behind England in Group A, lost 0-1 to the host country in the first match of the tournament.

Austria recovered to beat Northern Ireland 2-0 and then Norway 1-0 to advance, becoming the lowest-ranked team left in the final.

They made their league debut in 2017, progressing to the semi-finals, losing to Denmark on penalties. Head coach Irene Fuhrmann thinks it’s a “feeling” for Austria to once again mingle with the top nations in Europe as she prepares her team for a tough challenge.

“It’s a feeling that we are among the top eight teams in Europe again,” she said.

“We have another chance to face one of the best teams in this tournament. Germany, like England, have proven their consistency. They haven’t conceded a goal yet – that will be a win. unbelievable challenge.

“We’re always very meticulous, both in analyzing our opponents and in our own game. It’s a match we’re really looking forward to, because it’s something new for us against Germany on the pitch. such a big stage. I’m excited to see what we’ll be able to do.”

‘Austria has exceeded expectations’

The Telegraph’s Tom Garry analyzes the Germany vs Austria match on the Sky Sports Women’s Euros podcast:

“I really underestimated Germany before the tournament. Their form, the defeat against Serbia, gave some people, myself included, the wrong impression of Germany’s position.

“They’ve put out all the fire guns, very flaming. They’re working really hard on the ball and they look more sparkly and stronger than most of their opponents which we think will be for sure. The opponent has turned professional.

“They look very sharp, athletic and it’s hard to see them not going deep into the league.

“Austria has really exceeded my expectations. They look really well organized and maybe that shows how much Bundesliga experience they have in that team.

“There are so many people we could name, Barbara Dunst played really well, Laura Wienroither, I could go on.

“I think it’s going to be a very close quarter-final, I don’t think there will be a lot of goals. I can see that going into extra time, both teams are not conceding a lot and on that basis there will be no goals. a game with low scores.Austria restricts teams with very low xG.

“Austria wasn’t really fanciful at all before the tournament but they were in the semi-finals five years ago. Maybe there’s an element of ‘They won’t be able to do it again, it’s a match’. they did a great job, all credit to them.”
