Via Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr will be fighting his next showdown with MMA fighter Mikuru Asakura on September 24 in Japan. Mayweather, 45, announced that his exhibition match will be broadcast live on FITETV against Asakura, 29, who lives in Tokyo, Japan.
Mayweather is making a quick comeback after recently fighting one of his former partners named Don Moore.
Boxing fans wanted to see Floyd fight an exhibition match against the recently retired Manny Pacquiao, but he chose not to go in that direction for obvious reasons.
Pacquiao could easily beat Mayweather, 45, who has lost a lot of fights since retiring from the sport in 2017.
It’s unclear how long Mayweather will continue to fight showdowns, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he still does them in his 50s and 60s, as long as his fans are willing to buy them.
“I’m pretty sure in September we’ll give people what they want to see,” Floyd Mayweather Jr said in the announcement of his next exhibition bout against little-known Mikuru Asakura.
“People still want to see me play, not at the highest level, but they still want to be entertained with Floyd Mayweather. They wanted to meet a young man across from me to see if he could say, ‘Mayweather doesn’t need to do any more shows.’
“By doing exhibitions, it’s about keeping my figure. I can work out and that’s very important. Even if I do these exhibitions, I still don’t suffer any punishment.
“I’ve done one in Japan before and had a lot of fun. We went back and made one with Logan Paul. I can’t even call it an exhibition. I came to entertain and he came to hold on.
“It’s crazy that Logan Paul wants to do an exhibition again. The same person said that he was not paid. I am very happy to be back in Japan. I have been to Japan many times. It’s all about working smarter, not harder.
“I said I could pull it off like a fight with Logan Paul if you wanted me to. I can knock him out and get some early air. I’m pretty sure it’s him [Asakura] believes in his skills, but he has to realize that no other fighter he’s ever been in the ring with [octagon] It’s Floyd Mayweather.
“When you see all those other fighters, they are just fighters. Remember, I am Floyd Mayweather,” Mayweather said.
