In a battle in Manhattan, Representative Jerry Nadler defeated Democrat Carolyn Maloney in a closely watched primary, according to an Associated Press race.
The two incumbents, both chairing powerful committees for the House Democrats caucus, were placed in the same district following the redistricting of the area. (Nadler has represented the Upper West Side for many years, with Maloney representing the Upper East Side.)
Nadler and Maloney were both first elected in 1992, and have largely voted the same over the years, with some main exception.
Maloney gave his opponent a high rating, but Nadler received several key confirmations, including from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y.
Another candidate, Suraj Patel, a former aide to Obama, finished third.
Nadler is expected to take the House seat, as the area leans heavily towards Democrats. His opponent in November was Republican Michael Zumbluskas.
