Michigan Representative Peter Meijer, who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump after the Capitol riots, lost the Republican primaries to Trump-backed conservative challenger John Gibbs, according to an Associated Press run.
The loss to Meijer is a boost for Trump as he continues to endorse elementary school challenge to Republican Senate and House members who disagreed with his false narrative that the 2020 election was rigged.
Meijer, a freshman from the moderate Republican Party, was one of 10 House GOP members who voted to impeach Trump after the January 6 uprising.
Gibbs, a former Trump appointee to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, repeat the same rhetoric as a former president about denying the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Gibbs will face Democratic nominee Hillary Scholten in November. Scholten, a former attorney at the Justice Department, lost to Meijer in 2020 by more than 6 percentage points.
But after the redistricting, Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District looks different than it did two years ago. The Grand Rapids-based county is now more Democratic-leaning than in previous cycles and is seen as a subversive contest by Cook Politics Report.
And in a year in which Democrats are in grave danger of losing their majority in the House, the party is seeing Michigan’s third place as potential.
Tensions increased between Meijer and House Democrats last week after the Democratic Congressional Advocacy Committee (DCCC) released an ad against Gibbsconsiders him to be “too conservative for Western Michigan.”
Meijer claims the 30-second ad will benefit Gibbs in the Republican primaries.
But since the district is an ousted seat, voters nominate a more extreme conservative in the primary. could hurt Republicans’ chances keep red in November.
Meijer wrote in an idea was published the day before his elementary school.
“Those are patriots who will use every tool at their disposal to defeat him and similar candidates who they have said are an existential threat. They are funding instead. for Gibbs,” he added.
The DCCC declined to comment on the ad. reported expenses $425,000.
“If successful, Republican voters will be blamed if any of these candidates are elected,” Meijer wrote, “but surely the Democratic Party’s fingerprints will be on the weapon,” Meijer wrote. also wrote, “Let us never forget that.”

Since voting to impeach Trump, half 10 members of GOP announced that they will not seek re-election or lost a prime re-election bid for a more cautious challenger.
Representatives Jaime Herrera Butler and Dan Newhouse also face key challengers on Tuesday. The only member of the 10-man group to win re-election to date is California Representative David Valadao.
For this group’s final main game, Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney will take on Trump-confirmed challenger Harriet Hageman on August 16.
