Henrik Stenson continued his sizzling debut on the LIV Golf series, firing a brace below par 69 on Saturday to take a three-shot lead against Dustin Johnson in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Stenson and Johnson shot 69 matches in the second round at Trump National Bedminster.

Patrick Reed (73), Carlos Ortiz (70) and Talor Gooch are in third place, four times behind. Gooch rose to the top of the leaderboard on the strength of a seven under 64 score, the best round of the day to date.

Stenson, after being relieved of his duties as European Ryder Cup captain, made up for a double on the third hole with an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole. Stenson then hit four birdies with two bogeys on the back nine.

Stenson said: “I certainly wasn’t at my best today, but I was hung there. “It’s the harsher conditions with the wind.

“It’s a tough golf course, and the greens are fast and pretty undulating. When it’s windy, it’s even harder to get the ball into the perfect positions, and yes, it’s a bit difficult sometimes.”

According to the team format of the event, the 4 Aces GC, including Johnson, Reed, Pat Perez and Gooch, came in first place in the under-20 position, six places ahead of Majesticks GC. Stenson is part of the Majesticks team.

Phil Mickelson, one of the most famous names on the tour, went through a nightmare tournament and was completely unable to run with a 4 on par.

He was whistled on the first tee by a fan mocking the circuit’s connection to the Saudi royal family.

When asked if it upsets him, Mickelson said: “No, I’ve had a really good day. The people here are always great. They’ve been really nice to me. I’ve had a Really good day with the fans.”
