The Six Degrees of Separation is a theory that all people in the world are separated by no more than six social connections.
In other words, you know someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows Queen Elizabeth. Or the concept goes.
We’re borrowing the six-degree concept – well, loosely – to connect fighters from the past with their more modern rivals in our new occasional feature, “The Level segregation”.
Example: Let’s connect Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Super easy; We did it in two steps. Senior fought Grover Wiley, who fought Junior.
In this installment of the Boxing Junkie feature, we decided to try to link our number 3 weightlifter, Oleksandr Usyk, with the first Ukrainian-born boxer to win the world title, the Hall of Famer. and featherweight champion Louis “Kid” Kaplan.
That is not an easy task. First, Kaplan last fought in 1933 – 87 years ago. And, second, Kaplan is light.
How can we link a 135-pound athlete from a century ago with an active heavyweight champion? Turns out we can do it in just 11 steps, which isn’t much compared to the past time.
