Elite level competitions have been made, track records have dropped and Goodwood’s five-day financial run ends with G2 Qatar Lillie Langtry S. taking center stage at the Sussex venue on Saturday .
The £300,000 test for 14 stretched salesmen has fallen on the favorites list in six of the last nine releases, and this year’s market is headed by Sunderland Holding’s G2 Lancashire Oaks runner-up. Sea La Rosa (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Coolmore and Westerberg’s fourth G1 Irish Oaks Emily Dickinson (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). According to William Haggas, the former player’s stamina is unquestionable, with the Somerville Lodge manager bidding to double his winning streak following Baaeed’s G1 Sussex S. success earlier in the week. “Sea La Rosa won over a mile and five feathers at Lingfield last year, so she’s going to have a good run,” he insisted.
Aidan O’Brien is in unfamiliar territory and hasn’t registered a win, from seven runners, in the competition and is represented by progressive Emily Dickinson, who was nearly rejected by Rosscarbery (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in G3 Stanerra S. She will try to overcome a trend that has seen just five sophomore wins and one Ireland win in 19 renewals.
Accompanying her on her trip from Ireland was Newtown intern Jessica Harrington of Anner Stud Ring (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who twice chased Rosscarbery home and finished behind Emily Dickinson in Stanerra when last seen. The 5-year-old, who has been partnered with Hollie Doyle for the second time, counts Sea La Rosa when the duo met on G3 Princess Royal S. household bragging rights.
“Forbearance gave me a memorable afternoon at the Ebor Festival in York last year when she won the Sir Henry Cecil Galtres S. “She beat Sea La Rosa by more than four stages at Newmarket, but stubbornness William Haggas’s has improved dramatically since then.”
