Liam Williams will miss Wales’ autumn tests against New Zealand, Argentina and Australia after sustaining a collarbone injury on his Cardiff debut.

The England and Ireland Lions full-back was sore midway through the first half of Cardiff’s Rugby Championship win over Munster on Saturday.

He has undergone surgery and faces a 12 to 16 week recovery period, his club have confirmed.

Wales tackled three of the Rugby Championship teams in New Zealand, Argentina and Australia this November, in addition to a Test match against Georgia.

Williams, who has made 81 caps, also suggested Wales head coach Wayne Pivac an option on the wing, and his absence could be clearly felt.

Johnny McNicholl and Leigh Halfpenny are likely to be full-back candidates as Wales continues the World Cup countdown.

Halfpenny has not played for 14 months because of a serious knee injury, but he is said to be close to returning to the Scarlets.

Cardiff said: “Liam Williams underwent surgery last night after sustaining a collarbone injury.

The Wales full-back and the English and Irish Lions impressed on his Cardiff debut before damaging his shoulder in a 20-minute tackle.

“Williams currently faces a 12-16 week recovery period on the sidelines from surgery.”

The 31-year-old made his Test debut in 2012 and has featured for Wales in their last two World Cup campaigns.
