Lewis Hamilton has dismissed rumors of a “dry time” of Formula 1 and insists Mercedes will capitalize on the positives from their 2022 struggle to return to the top.
Progressing to their 17th lap of 22 in Singapore, Hamilton and Mercedes – the most dominant combination in F1 history – are still awaiting their first wins of the season after falling behind following regulatory changes. occlusion.
Hamilton, who holds the record for winning a race in all of his 15 F1 seasons to date and has won six titles for Mercedes since 2014, said on Wednesday at a Petronas event that he he “didn’t look at” [2022] like a drought”.
“I see that as adversity and I think that’s where you can really energize,” the seven-time champion explained. “I think we got a lot of power in depth. When you win all the time it’s a great thing but you don’t gain a lot when you win.
“There are six races [left] So there are six chances and we’ll try to win, but if we don’t play well, I don’t think it’s the end of the world.
Red Bull and Hamilton’s title rival from last year, Max Verstappen, has stormed this year but defiant Hamilton added: “We’ll be back on top.”
Although Mercedes has been much behind Red Bull and Ferrari overall this year, their failure to make mistakes means they have a chance to overhaul the Scuderia to come second in the constructors rankings with good results.
Mercedes is 35 points behind Ferrari before Marina Bay at the weekend.
“Our goal is to try to get second place in the teams because that makes a huge impact on everyone coming back to the factory and so these next six races are just attack. max, there’s nothing to lose and that’s going to make it worse,” Hamilton said.
“I would say that Singapore should be a good road for us because it’s a high-force circuit. However, it’s very bumpy.”
Hamilton spoke after Mercedes extended its partnership with Petronas, who will supply the team with sustainable fuel from 2026.
