Let’s not put Chet Holmgren in the Hall of Fame just yet

One of the favorite pastimes of sports enthusiasts has always been competition. That’s especially true of college players involved in any professional sports. With basketball prospects, these comparisons start in high school and follow them through college and into the NBA for its creators.

Gonzaga Bulldogs star Chet Holmgren is no different. But the latest comparison made his way will put a lot of pressure on the freshman phenom. Yahoo Sports spoke to a number of scouts around the NBA and asked about Holmgren being on the draft over the next few months. One scout even dropped Kevin Durant’s name when talking about Holmgren.

“His invisibles are off the charts,” an NBA scout said. “He’s physically very unique with all the other skills and abilities, and if you’re willing to do that swing at home, he’s totally worth it.”

Another scout said:

“It’s the same thing we heard about Kevin Durant when he joined the NBA. He can’t lift 135 pounds, but he can shoot off the ball and impact the game. Chets can have a similar effect in a game on a different level than Durant. ”

Talk about high praise. Those are some of the highest compliments a college employee can receive. I don’t completely agree with it, but there are some similarities. Holmgren, like Durant, can shoot all three (which was rare in 2007), both can handle the ball better than most 7-footers, and both can take the man. his go ball. They’re both tall, thin, and the couch can’t squeeze their weight as freshmen in college.

Holmgren’s lack of upper body strength wouldn’t worry me much right now. What worries me is the weight of this comparison on Holmgren’s shoulders. I’m not saying he can’t be a good NBA player, but someone else scouting report on Holmgren compared him to Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki. Thus, Holmgren was mentioned in the same sentences as Durant and Nowitzki. These are two of the best shooters the NBA has ever seen. If he can be half as good as either of those players, then he has a pretty solid professional career ahead of him.

And is Holmgren the best player on his current team? I recall Drew Timme leading the comeback against Memphis last Saturday in the NCAA Tournament. Holmgren scored just nine points and got nine rebounds in 29 minutes during the whole season. Timme took 25 points and 14 rebounds and brought the team back as if he’d finished the whole year. I don’t want to disparage Chet, but that’s the result. Maybe he’s closer to Kristaps Porziņģis than KD or Dirk. All I’m saying is that sometimes these comparisons are more like wishful thinking.

Holmgren will be the top pick in the draft should he decide to leave Gonzaga after the season. A lot of fake draft yes Holmgren is No. 1 overall Picked up by whoever owns it will arrive in June. I’m sure Holmgren will have a long career based on his skill set, but sometimes anointing too soon for the “next big thing” can get crazy.
