Leica unveils its first 4K ultra-short throw projector

Medium Leica disclosure The company’s first ultra-short throw (UST) projector called the Cine 1 could project an 80- or 100-inch image when parked just 6 inches from a wall. While it may seem a bit strange for a camera company to make a projector, the UST models require precision optics to produce a square image while projecting straight up – and that’s right up the alley for Leica.

Leica has two versions of the Cine 1 designed for 80-inch and 100-inch screens, with the former about 6 inches from the wall and the latter about 12 inches. Leica recommends placing them in exactly those places and using the recommended screen size, as the optics are designed for that. So they also sell 80 and 100 inch ambient light canceling (ALR) monitors. They produce 2,100 and 2,500 lumens for the 80 and 100 inch models, respectively.

On the audio front, it offers built-in Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers for surround sound. It comes with a TV tuner for Linear TVs and HiSense’s VIDAA Operating System as the smart TV platform. You can also install external storage, a Blu-ray player, or a console via the HDMI and USB inputs.

Other key specs are still missing, like color space coverage and HDR support. However, they are said to cost $6,900 for the 80-inch and $7,900 for the 100-inch, so you’d expect all the bells and whistles possible.
