Legislation which allows abortion of babies with Down’s syndrome up until birth upheld by Court of Appeal | UK News

An appeals court upheld a law that allows abortion of babies with Down syndrome until birth, after a woman with the condition challenged it.

Heidi Crowter, 27, from Coventry, sued the Department of Health and Social Care in hopes of removing part of the Abortion Act.

Judges ruled last September that the law was not against the law and was intended to strike a balance between fetal rights and women’s rights.

The case was reviewed by the Court of Appeals at a hearing in July.

In summarizing the decision of Lord Justice Underhill, Lady Justice Thirlwall and Lord Justice Peter Jackson, the judges said the Act did not interfere with the right of “disabled persons to live”.
