The government is planning to make it easier for cyclists in case they hit a pedestrian. Tell LBC about upcoming changes to the Highway CodeTransport Secretary Grant Shapps announced his intention to crack down on dangerous cycling.
The Department for Transport (DfT) confirms this, with a spokesperson telling Auto Express: “We have some of the safest roads in the world, but this Government is committed to making them safer. again.
“We are exploring changes to allow us to more easily prosecute dangerous cyclists, while also providing more direct and continuous cycling routes in towns and cities. , places that are physically separated from pedestrians and motorized traffic.”
The DfT added that it is important for any new legislation to balance and encourage cycling, pointing out that there are already strict laws for cyclists. The DfT said any proposed changes to make it easier to prosecute dangerous cyclists would require public consultation.
Cyclists who engage in bodily harm can already be charged with barbaric and insane driving, with a maximum penalty of two years in prison. A £1,000 fine can also be awarded to those who cycle under the influence of drinks or drugs.
Changes to the Highway Code that went into effect on January 29 include the introduction of a road user decentralization, which means cars must give way to cyclists, but cyclists must give way to pedestrians.
