Leave No Trace Take Home Spinaway Win Upset 14-1

Coach Phil Serpe unsure of what to expect from his chubby 2-year-old Leave no trace in $300,000 Spinaway Stakes (G1) on September 4 at Racecourse Saratoga.

The betting public is also suspicious, sending the daughter of WellSpring Stables Machining out with odds of 14-1.

“You just don’t know who these fillers are,” says Serpe.

People discovered a significant amount of Leave No Trace on the penultimate day of the Saratoga encounter as she pushed for a 1/2 length win before Magic wheel and eight other 2-year-old fillings to help Serpe win his first 1st grade in 29 years.

“It’s great,” said Serpe, whose last No. 1 win came with Birdonthewire at the Vosburgh Stakes in 1993. “I’m really happy for the people who own this horse. They are great people. They deserve it. It’s a great thing for everyone.”

Dr. Robert Vukovich and his wife, Laura, run WellSpring Stables, and it was their team that astutely chose not to track, a daughter of Good journey Tanquerray mare, for $40,000 from a Vinery Sales consignment at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern Fall Yearling Sale.

“All credit goes to the owner and his employees,” said Serpe. “They did a great job. They took these horses out. Two years ago, they found Safe Behavior , who won the Queen’s Plate last year. They found this rubbish and they found it Bank on Anna , who won the bet (Union Avenue Handicap, August 12). Whatever their theory of buying these horses, they are doing very well. “

Once purchased, Serpe made Leave No Trace a stake winner after an impressive debut win 2/3 length July 20 at Spa in a maiden race limited to sold horses or RNA for $50,000 or less at their last sales.

“We really didn’t end up with our 2-year-old first-timers at all,” says Serpe. “So when she won that day, she was impressed, and that shows something in our barn.”

With that initial success, Serpe didn’t hesitate to aim for the seven-feather long Spinaway, where he found six fillings with one win, like Leave No Trace, but three bet wins to come.

“She’s had a great workout. She’s 59 years old has worked and changed for fun, and you have to go. Like they say, you have to make hay when the sun shines. Go.”

Meanwhile, Jose Lezcano and Leave No Trace pressed for speed from second and moved forward as Naughty Gal tired and retreated to ninth. DJ Stable’s Wonder Wheel, Debutante Stakes and Favorite 7-5 winner, and first winner Kaling started the long chase but couldn’t get the place in the last part.

Leaving no trace ($31.60) counts towards 1:24.03 time for seven stretches.

Casse says the Wheel of Miracles will be pointed to October 7 Darley Alcibiades Stakes (G1) at
KeenelandBreeders’ Cup hometown on November 4-5.

While Serpe is still undecided on Leave No Trace’s next start, if she does head to the $2 million NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), she’s picked up some cash to pay off. easier to keep an employer’s checkbook. With Spinaway serving as a Breeders’ Dirt Dozen Cup race, Leave Me Now earned a $30,000 credit to start in the Juvenile. Wonder Wheel received a $15,000 credit and Kaling $7,500.

The first stake winner in Tanquerray, Leave No Trace was her third pony and her second winner. She also has an avid sister with the winner of Spinaway and 2022 Fictional pony.
