League of Legends source code is being held for ransom, but Riot is not paying

Source Code for Fantasy MOBA League of Legends Riot Games has confirmed its automated Teamfight Tactics spin-off game has been stolen and ransomed. In a series tweets, the developer revealed that this code was taken in an attack on their system last week. The request was made by the hackers, which Riot says they won’t give up. The hack is being investigated by both Riot and law enforcement, but Riot insists that League of Legends player data and personal information was not compromised by hackers.

Riot said: “Over the weekend, our analysis confirmed that the source code of League of Legends, TFT, and a legacy anti-cheat platform were stolen by attackers. “Today, we received a ransom email. Needless to say, we will not pay.” The company explained that problems with League Of Legends could arise in the future due to the disruption caused by the attack.

Riot said it will focus its efforts on reducing the chance of any new cheats that could emerge as a result of the source code theft. The stolen code includes some experimental features that could be leaked by attackers. However, Riot emphasized that “most of this content is in prototype form and there is no guarantee that it will be released”.

Riot internal security is working with external consultants to assess how last week’s attack was achieved through social engineering, managed to succeed. Law enforcement agencies are also investigating the hack, which Riot says was the act of a group rather than a lone moderator. The company said a report “details the attackers’ specifications, the areas of Riot security that failed, and the steps we’re taking to ensure this doesn’t happen again” will released in the future.

The day before the attack went public, Riot lay off 46 employees on their recruiting, HR, support, and esports teams. The company attributed the job loss to a “strategic shift” and said the decision was “part of our normal course of business”.
