Layers Of Fear Preview – Definitive Version Made Through “Death By A Thousand Cuts”

As I walked through the corridors of the weathered lighthouse, nervously twisting each doorknob trying to find something that would give me both passage and a false sense of security, I could feel Sea water sprayed on his skin. I can smell sea salt, damp wood, and smoke billowing from blown out lanterns. With time, these feelings will pass, as the walls become flesh and the crashing waves, the wailing of a widow.

All in all, Layers of Fear (2023) is a game with an intense atmosphere—the depth of the game becomes all the more dramatic when you think I’m not thousands of miles away, wandering the halls of a lighthouse on the east coast, which is sitting in a plastic chair surrounded by thousands of other game enthusiasts at GDC. After spending 30 minutes on the game–during which I controlled two characters, The Painter and a new character named The Writer–I talked to the team about the upcoming, uh… ah , we’ll talk about that later on Monday.

Đang chơi: Layers of Fear – Hướng dẫn chơi chính thức trong 11 phút

So what we want to do is add a writer to [the game] There’s another side of art to the show,” Kocuerk said. “And then we looked for a hook. And there were a lot of women writers – and especially Black female writers – in that era. And it’s a tough place for them. It’s been a tough time to get in, which is in line with the themes we’re trying to work on.”

During the 1960s and 1970s in America, a number of Black female authors released truly profound works of literature: authors like Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Lorraine Hansberry, and Octavia E. Butler. However, it has always been a struggle for these works to receive the level of recognition they deserve. To see this wave of writers not only acknowledge, but also the dreams that prompted these visionaries to explore in a game, was a magical surprise. The Writer’s plot and inclusion also add nuance to Layers of Fear, as it shows that “artistic obsession” is not an inherently evil or selfish thing. Instead, the Writer is just trying to regain her independence and leave her own mark after spending the past two decades serving her family.

“A lot of horror is like, ‘Why would you do this stupid thing?’ [But] She is a mother and she has raised her son, and now it is time for her to separate and do her own thing. And her son is positive [towards her independence] and he pushes her to do her own thing – to do what’s good for her. So we try to explore that a little bit to show that phobias don’t always happen [clear cut.]”

The addition of The Writer is the best example of what Anshar Studios is aiming for: creating thoughtful innovations. Kocuerk said the team looked to the community for guidance, spending a lot of time pre-production researching what they liked and what didn’t work. Anshar Studios also met with the developers behind the original games to see what ideas were left over or what they would do differently if they had more time and resources.

“We want [create] the crowning work of this universe. It’s a very important franchise for Bloober–it’s what put them on the map,” Kocurek said. “So we want to do more and this makes sense. To give players more love of the universe, give them something that complements it, not just a remake of what’s already done.

“While we still have the same event [and] same sequence, we arrange them in different order to build better intensity. We’ve added lots of animations to increase immersion, more VO, and more wife encounters, all to give you more experience for a less passive experience. [..] sometimes i call [the process] death by a thousand cuts. There are lots of different changes to push it all higher–to build a better atmosphere, build better intensity, and make it more intuitive. It’s not one big change, it’s just many smaller changes, to make it the best it can be.”

Of course, Anshar Studios isn’t the only team to revive a beloved horror series. With Resident Evil remakes almost yearly, a Dead Space revival, a new Alan Wake on the way, and even Anshar Studios collaborator Bloober Team working on a very cool Silent Hill 2 remake To be expected, there is no denying that the game industry is growing. see a trend of horror game remakes. Naturally, I had to ask Kocurek why he thought so.

“I don’t think there’s a big answer to that,” Kocurek said. “The thing is, though, times are getting a little darker with COVID and everything. So things may not be as positive as they used to be. And for a lot of people, [horror is] a safe space to experience fear–a safe space to experience the darker side. So it gets them through and helps them learn a little bit about themselves. It might be.”

For those who want to learn more about themselves—and the game’s new character, The Writer—Layers of Fear is scheduled to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC this June.
