Lavrov: Jaishankar mum on whether India played role in fixing Blinken-Lavrov meeting | India News

NEW DELHI: In their first meeting in Delhi since the start of the Ukraine war, US secretary of state Antony blink on Thursday asked his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov to end the war and also seek to reverse what he described as an irresponsible decision by Moscow to withdraw from the New START nuclear weapons treaty, which places verifiable limits on the United States’ nuclear arsenal and Russia.
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar did not respond to a question about whether the Indian government could play any role in facilitating the meeting in its territory. The meeting, in which Blinken also sought the release of a US citizen, lasted for 10 minutes.
blink and Lavrov were last seen together at the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Bali in July 2022, but no meeting has taken place since. Lavrov stormed out of the G20 meeting as Western countries condemned the war.
However, a Russian spokesman said that none of the talks in the “contact”, which according to Russian authorities, took place at the behest of Blinken. “He (Lavrov) stood to talk to him during the second session of the G20. No actual talks or meetings took place,” the official said.
Regarding the New START treaty, Blinken said he told Lavrov that mutual compliance is in the interest of both the US and Russia. “That is what people around the world expect from us as nuclear powers. I told him that no matter what is happening in the world or in our relationship, the United States will always be ready to engage and act for strategic arms control, just as we did. even at the height of the Cold War,” Blinken said during the speech. the media.
Describing Russia as an exception during the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting, Blinken praised India’s role and welcomed the resulting document saying it was the first time the group had reached consensus on multiple issues. He said the document endorsed the Bali Declaration, in which member states, he added, condemned the Ukraine war. Earlier, Lavrov had “apologised” to India and the countries of the southern hemisphere for what he called the West’s rude behavior in turning the G20 agenda into a farce.
