Lavelle Field Affected By Loss Of Eclair Surf After National Fall Injury | Racing news

Emma Lavelle was heartbroken after Eclair Surf died Sunday morning from injuries sustained in a fall at the Randox Grand National on Saturday.

The eight-year-old is one of the leading contenders for the Aintree performance, having won the Classic Race at Warwick before sending home last week Scottish nationalist heroine Win My Wings in Eider at Newcastle.

Eclair Surf looked set to miss a spot at the Grand National at the start of the week, but his sudden defection meant he was dropped from the reserve list.

Cruelly, however, he suffered a heavy fall on the third fence and while he was stable and walking back to the racecourse stables, he was later transferred to Leahurst Equine Hospital and His condition deteriorated overnight causing him to have his benefits cut. basess.

“We were optimistic when he left the track, but during the night he staggered and became more and more miserable, which was not the right thing to do to continue,” Lavelle said.

“He was in the right place to make those decisions and the whole team at both the race and the hospital were fantastic.

“You usually sit there and think about ifs and buts and why not, but you can’t sit and think like that.

“It’s a real gutter for everyone – his owner and the team. He’s an exciting horse for the future, but what can you say?”

Chris Proudman, Aintree Racecourse Veterinary Advisor, said: “We are saddened to learn that Eclair Surf had to go to bed this morning.

“After yesterday’s fall, it was stable again before starting to be transported back to the barn.

“Everything will probably be done for him and our thoughts are very much with those who love and care about him.”

The Eclair Surf was one of two deaths in the National along with Discorama coached by Paul Nolan, who was pulled up by Bryan Cooper with a pelvic injury.

Nolan said: “I’m devastated. But it’s the race and you have to accept that.

“He was a great servant and he gave us great days, but all we could do was reflect on the happy days and what he did for us.

“It’s just devastating for the owners and the yard, and it’s just one of those terrible things, but it’s part of racing and that’s it.

“Sorry, I couldn’t attend. My dad was sick at home and we had to come back from Aintree, so we’re staying with him.

“He’s not good. It puts things into perspective. We didn’t tell him the horse was badly injured, (just) that he pulled the muscle and went home – there are some things you have to say to soften the blow.”

There were a total of three National Day holiday deaths, in which Elle Est Belle collapsed during a test run of Betway Mersey Novices’ Hurdle.

James Given, director of equine health and welfare at the British Equestrian Authority, said: “We are all deeply saddened by the fatal injuries at the Grand National festival, although no one was. sadder than the stable trainers, owners and staff that will have given these horses unparalleled care throughout their lives.

“Following a detailed assessment in 2011/12, BHA racecourse and Aintree worked together to put in place a number of key measures that have helped reduce injury rates during the Grand National meeting over the years. They include changing the cores of the Grand National fence with a more forgiving rubber design; leveling the landing ground of the fence to ensure horses take off and land at the same level; a worthwhile investment tell the race surface and introduce modern ‘fog system’ fans to keep the horses cool after they race, among others.

“However, welfare and safety is an ever-evolving commitment and the BHA works continuously alongside our racetracks to further improve the sport’s safety profile and reduce possible risks. Any incidents this week will be reviewed, and this information will then build on the substantial evidence and assessment that took place as part of the 2011/12 audit and in subsequent years . If we identify any further trends that may be associated with increased risk, we can act on them.”
