Latest iOS 16 beta limits the ability to edit and delete messages
Apple is decreasing iOS 16’s iMessage’s editing and unsend features were praised. Companies have release fourth developer beta of iOS 16, iPadOS 16″ and macOS Ventura limits you to five edits for a given message within the available 15 minutes, and shrinks the review window from 15 minutes to just two. You can also tap on a message to see its edit history – before, you would just see a notification that it was edited.
The company did not explain the decision. We asked Apple if they could share their reasoning. However, AppleInsider tell possibilities of abuse with the former approach. Someone can edit the message to make it look like you’ve agreed to something. They may alternately harass you by sending messages long enough to get noticed, but disappear before you can preserve evidence.
You can always prevent edits and deletions by turning off iMessage. That forces chats to switch to SMS, where those features aren’t available. Apple’s moves won’t completely prevent harassment, but may encourage you to turn on iMessage without fearing someone could easily alter your conversation.
