Brasilia:

For more than 20 years, he lived alone in the Brazilian Amazon, eating nuts, fruit and game – a symbol of the struggle of indigenous peoples to survive in isolation in the rainforest.

Now, this unnamed man is dead, and his passing has caused a stir around the world.

His life was marked by massacres that made him the sole survivor of a small tribe attacked by gunmen apparently hired by ranchers seeking to exploit the virgin Amazon region. profile.

He was found dead in a hammock on August 23 in the Tanaru Indigenous Territory. Authorities found no signs of violence and believe he died of natural causes.

The man was covered in the bright plumage of a bird called a guacamaya, a type of macaw, local reports said.

The Tanaru Indigenous Territory consists of 8,000 hectares (30 square miles) of protected rainforest in the southwestern Brazilian state of Rondonia, bordering Bolivia. The reserve is surrounded by extensive cattle ranches.

According to Survival International NGP, this is one of Brazil’s most dangerous regions, rife with illegal logging and logging.

NGO director Fiona Watson said the land of Tanaru was “like a green oasis in the sea of destruction”.

An arrow shot

The “Man in the Hole” was first discovered in 1996 by a team of documents traveling with officials from the National Organization of Indians, a government agency that was investigating a massacre that targeted the ministry. his clan.

Proving the presence of indigenous people in the Tanaru forest area is necessary to make the area legally protected.

The footage was featured in a documentary called “Corumbiara” in 2009.

In it, the man’s eyes are seen from inside a straw hut. A spear pointed out at one point, as if scaring the visitor. But no one said a word.

Over the years, Funai teams have returned with representatives of neighboring tribes to try to determine the language the man speaks and learn more about his ethnicity.

But he made it clear that he didn’t want to get involved with anyone. Feeling threatened, he once shot an arrow that seriously injured a visiting crew member.

“One can only imagine what this man was thinking, going through, living alone, not being able to talk to anyone and I think very scared because any outsider to him is a threat. menacing, with his terrible experience,” said Watson.

After that, the authorities just tried to patrol his territory and look for signs that he was still alive.

In the last known footage of him alive – filmed in 2011 but not released until seven years later – he is seen half-naked cutting trees with an ax.

In addition to the bow and arrow showing him hunting, there are also gardens where he grows fruits and vegetables, such as papaya and cassava.

“We saw one of his gardens and it was full of produce – beautifully preserved,” said Watson, who visited the site in 2005.

But what intrigued the researchers most were the numerous pits he dug – about two meters (seven feet) deep and with sharp spears at the bottom.

Funai said officials have found 53 places that used to be his home in Tanaru territory, always with the same structure: a small straw hut with a door and a hole.

The holes are used to trap the animal, but experts say they could also be a place for him to hide from intruders or have some kind of spiritual purpose.

The holes, says Watson, are “a mystery that died with him,” as is the history of the Tanaru people.

Funai identified 114 indigenous groups living in isolation in the Brazilian Amazon region.
