Antonio Lascuña failed to see the 16th hole putting two veterans in the door on Thursday as the 52-year-old suffered heart attacks during the last three turns of the Philippine Golf Tour (PGT) had a chance. his first title of the year after reaching the final of the Villamor Match Play ICTSI Championship.
The four-time Medal of Merit winner eliminated Gerald Rosales in the quarterfinals in the morning, 4&3, before returning at noon—under the scorching heat—to defeat the former Philippine Open champion wide, Clyde Mondilla, 5&3.
“I’m too tired,” Lascuña said after using strong starts to eliminate his formidable foes and arrange a title clash with Filipino-German Keanu Jahns, who eliminated the former. LJ Go national champion, 2&1, in the other semi-final. “But I still have enough [for the finals].”
Jahns, the 24th seed who defeated No 1 Guido Van Der Valk in the quarterfinals, will also seek his first professional title. He has finished second twice on the PGT, most recently at Apo in 2019 when he was three strokes behind Lascuña.
Meanwhile, Harmie Constantino and amateur tennis player Rianne Malixi arranged a title fight in the women’s event after knocking out Marvi Monsalve, 6&4, and No. 1 Chihiro Ikeda 3&2, respectively.
“I played well and my swing was good,” Jahns said when asked about his chances against the hottest player of the past two months on tour.
