Overpass 6 – Los Angeles’ newest bridge, which opened just two weeks ago – is currently closed until further notice, largely due to a near-constant series of illegal activities from people driving across the brand new $588 million bridge in downtown LA

Follow CBS News. The LAPD closed the bridge several times in an attempt to limit these events, but to no avail. Now, speed bumps are being installed, and LAPD Director Michel Moore is almost out of ideas.

Moore said the department would not be able to prevent them from getting out of the situation.

“Despite hundreds of accusations, citations and arrests, we still see an increase in this. So I’m asking for the public’s help and support and help,” he said at a police commission meeting.

Along with the new speed humps, the city is installing medians as well as fences to prevent people from widening the archways, which is just another puzzling thing people are doing on the bridge.

So far, police have made nearly 60 citations and impounded six vehicles in connection with the 6th Street Viaduct activity in the past five days alone, according to Moore.

For the most part, it seems like a lot of goofy behavior is your typical thug behavior in the name of going viral. Videos on social media show people racing in the street and making donuts on the Viaduct, as well as climbing the arch. Less than two weeks ago, the driver of a Dodge Challenger crashed while making donuts on a bridge, abandoned the car and fled on foot.

It’s not just muscle car nonsense, though: CBS reported on a video of a man receiving one. haircuts in the middle of the bridge, or another silhouette showing a boxing man in a red cape. Moore says that the majority of people who watch the glorious video on Viaduct are outcasts.

The original bridge that Viaduct replaced is an iconic LA landmark, seen in movies like Grease and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The new bridge wasted no time making a name for itself, obviously.

So far, there is no timeline for when the Viaduct will reopen. As it happens, it’s anyone’s guess whether new vehicles and barriers will prevent further nonsense from closing the bridge again.
